Obama recognizes opposition in Syria

Follow clayclai on Twitter

I guess he wanted to do it before Assad was completely defeated.

BBC News has this report:
Obama recognises Syria opposition coalition
11 December 2012 Last updated at 19:06 ET

The US has formally recognised Syria's opposition rebel coalition as the "legitimate representative" of the Syrian people, says President Obama.

Speaking to ABC News in the US, Mr Obama said the coalition was now "inclusive enough, is reflective and representative enough".

He described the move - already made by the UK and the EU - as "a big step".

Activists say some 40,000 people have died in more than 18 months of battle against President Bashar al-Assad. More...

From the White House Press Briefing today:
Q Syria, Jay?

MR. CARNEY: Yes, Syria.

Q Can you explain to us which groups you're going to support and which groups you won’t and what your reasoning is?

MR. CARNEY: I can say a few things. Tomorrow, Deputy Secretary of State Burns will attend the Friends of Syria -- Friends of the Syrian People meeting in Morocco. We will do all we can to broaden our support of the Syrian opposition coalition and to work with like-minded countries to bring this crisis to an end.

We are pleased with the Syrian Opposition Coalition’s continued efforts to organize, form technical committees, engage with the international community, and take concrete steps to promote a unified, just, democratic future for Syria.

These actions are in line with what we and our international partners hoped would result from the formation of the Syrian Opposition Coalition in Doha last month. As we look to tomorrow’s meeting and our ongoing efforts to support the Syrian people, let me be absolutely clear: The United States stands with the Syrian people in insisting that any transition process result in a peaceful, unified, democratic Syria, in which all citizens are protected -- Sunni, Alawite, Christians, Kurds, Druze, men, women and children. And a future of this kind cannot include Bashar al Assad.

Q Still no plans for the U.S. to get involved militarily?

MR. CARNEY: That's correct. We provide significant assistance to the Syrian people in humanitarian aid. We provide significant non-lethal assistance to the opposition. But our position on providing lethal aid has not changed.

Q Jay, can I follow up on Syria?

MR. CARNEY: Okay, let me -- I've got to get to some folks in the back. But go ahead, Kristen, on this. On Syria, go ahead.

Q Okay, thank you. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta seemed to suggest that the Syrian government had slowed its preparations of chemical weapons, that the administration is not as concerned about this as it may have been last week. Can you talk a little bit about that? Is that accurate, and what has changed?

MR. CARNEY: Well, I'm not going to get into assessments beyond what Secretary of Defense Panetta said. I would simply reiterate our clear warning to the Assad regime about the potential use of or proliferation of chemical weapons. And that warning was made by the President, and that warning stands.

We take this very seriously. And were the Assad regime to unwisely make the wrong choice here, there would be consequences.

Speaking for the murderous regime in Syria

Follow clayclai on Twitter

One Kossack regularly posts Assad regime talking points in comments to my diaries on Syria. In my last diary he did this with eleven separate comments to my one diary His the total verbiage in those comments was much longer than my diary and this Kossack has yet to write a single diary of his own.

There's no way I have the time to respond to all of his postings, so I'll take one.

One of his comments to my Sunday dairy repeated one of the newest and most graphic false charges made against the Free Syrian Army by the Assad regime:
There are atrocities being committed by BOTH sides (0+ / 0-)

Since you always link to videos showing atrocities by the regime, I'll add one by the FSA.

WARNING - GRAPHIC
FSA terrorists let child behead unarmed prisoner with a sword - GRAPHIC !

http://www.liveleak.com/...
This video only surfaced on Sunday and it was posted to a comment in my diary "hot out of the oven" before anyone had a chance to investigate and respond. Well,, now they have and below the fold, I'll tell you what they found. [warning graphic violence]

Today EAWorldView has this report on the video:
Questions About the "Boy Beheads Two Regime Officers" Video

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 9:56 | James Miller

Yesterday we noted a claimed video of a group of men and a young boy beheading two men who were reportedly "Alawite officers" involved in the Houla massacre.

The video was reportedly taken on Sunday, provided to a journalist by a "commander in Homs".

By the end of the day, however, activists were claiming the discovery of footage, posted on a pro-regime YouTube channel months ago, that apparently had some of the images in the beheading video which emerged yesterday:

An observer who circulated the beheading video initially stood by the claim that it was taken on Saturday morning, but later he amended this from "sources", to say the incident occured on 22 October in the al-Khalidiyah district of Homs.

That "clarification" fits with the report of Zilal, an activist who is associated with the opposition CFDPC, that the images --- taken in October --- first appeared on a programme of Sama TV, a pro-regime television channel. More...

Assad and friends create these false attacks against the opposition, which has been reported to include even staged suicide bombings, because they realize that just such "muddying of the waters," especially with regards to international public opinion, is essential if non-interference with their murderous policies is to be maintained.

So please forgive me if I have been a little hard on the people that peddle this kind of "report" in the comments to my diary, but I consider those that go out of their way to do this as accomplishes to Assad's mass murder.

State of the war in Syria: Most of Damascus now in FSA hands!

Follow clayclai on Twitter

As these maps published Friday by the Institute for the Study of War show, Bashar al-Assad now controls less than half of his capital city of Damascus, and is basically holding up in his stronghold of downtown Damascus. It is these facts on the ground that are now driving this recent flurry of international activity around Syria.

The Syrian people are on the verge of winning this war with very little help from the US or anyone else in the international "community" and NATO and Russia and everyone else are all scrambling for a way to deal with that.

The Battle for Damascus: The Current State of Play in Syria
by Institute for the Study of War on Dec 07, 2012
Recent rebel victories in the Syrian capital region, such as the closure of the Damascus International airport, have led to speculation that the Assad regime may be close to collapse. While this is possible, it is also important to recognize that the regime still maintains control of downtown Damascus despite these significant victories for the opposition. This elevates the question of where specifically the regime still maintains control in Damascus.
Were any Syrians invited to this meeting today?
Russia and US in Geneva talks over future of Syria
But foreign minister says 'brainstorming session' with UN envoy does not signal Moscow's support for Assad is waning
Julian Borger, diplomatic editor
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 9 December 2012 11.46 EST
Russian and American diplomats have met in Geneva to discuss the future of Syria with the UN envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, according to the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, who insisted the meeting did not imply Moscow had softened in its support for the Syrian leader, Bashar al-Assad. More...

They describe the regime's tactics this way:
The regime has consolidated much of ita forces in Damascus city center and reduced patrolling in suburbs with robust opposition presence. In retaliation for rebel activity in these neighborhoods, the regime is responding broadly with air strikes and artillery, and with civilian massacres in the Sunni southern neighborhoods of Damascus.
Whatever crimes and mistakes may have been made by fighters on the opposition side, they don't rely on tactics that specifically target civilians the way Assad does.

That is why I will continue to point out that those Kossacks who promote the view that both sides in this civil war are equally bad are spreading Assad's propaganda and are objectively on the side of the regime and in support of its policy of mass murder.

The so-called anti-interventionist "left" is still in complete denial as to the true nature and current situation in Syria as a glance at today's Global Research quickly shows. They still fully support the fascist Assad regime.

Post these statements under delusional:
[I]t appears that the hounds of hell are desperately barking for some action on Syria. Frustrated by the successful efforts of the Syrian government to turn back the western backed and armed terrorists, their stooges and proxies, they have gone back to old tactics again...here they go again, trying to put the international community in a receptive mood to the idea of attacking Syria by claiming that the Assad government, not them, is desperate enough to use chemical weapons, specifically sarin gas.
...
“I think there is no question that we remain very concerned, very concerned,” Panetta said, “that, as the opposition advances, in particular in Damascus, that regime might very well consider the use of chemical weapons.”

Panetta has things backwards, like all of them. The terrorist “opposition” is not making advances, even though they try. They are getting their collective behinds kicked. The Syrian Arab Army remains very strong and in good spirits.
Clearly they are lying or completely delusional about how the tide of battle is going, but the troubling thing about all this talk, coming from the pro-Assad forces, about a Western-backed false flag chemical attack, makes me fear greatly that Assad is planning to use chemical warfare in spite of all the warnings. In fact, for Global Research, that is already a foregone conclusion. We don't even have to wait for the attack to see how they'll call it:
Any use of chemical weapons will obviously have the fingerprints of terrorists, not the Syrian government, all over them. Cui bono (to whose benefit) is such an attack? It’s obvious, as has been since the beginning of these fascist, imperialist wars.
and why not, they already blame US imperialism for all the deaths in Syria:
The hungry monster of US imperialism is not satisfied with having killed around 35,000 Syrians, a large number of them defense forces.
Is it the US imperialists that are dropping cluster bombs on Syrian cities or is it that US imperialism is forcing Assad to do it?

Carl Davidson once recommended Global Research to me as a creditable source. I wonder if he still does?

In this evenings broadcast, the channel formerly known as Russia Today is also expecting chemical attack in Syria but they are also claiming that it is the opposition that has and will be using chemical weapons. This is very troubling talk from a source that rarely bothers to mention how many people are being murdered in Syria.

Syria: Obama's moves Assad's "red line" back as SOHR reports 42,000 dead!

Yesterday, 6 December 2012 the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the number of Syrians killed in the conflict since March 2011 was over 42,000.
Follow clayclai on Twitter
On August 20, 2012 President Barack Obama showed up at a White House press briefing and laid out what he called his "red line" against the movement or use of chemical weapons by Bashar Assad in Syria. At the time Syria Tracker put the total number of Syrians killed in the conflict at 24,456.

Several hours after he made that statement, I wrote a diary here calling the statement a "green light" to more slaughter because it also signaled to Assad that he could continue his carnage with sub-chemical weapons such as cluster bombs carrying napalm and kill at at least another ten thousand people without any concern that the US would stand in his way.

Specificity, what Obama said in August was:
We have communicated in no uncertain terms with every player in the region that that’s a red line for us and that there would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons.
...
We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation.
So far, Assad has not used chemicals and Obama has kept his word not to intervene militarily, even sending the CIA in to make sure the people Assad was bombing wouldn't be able to get modern anti-aircraft weapons before they were able to take then from the Assad forces themselves. He blocked shipments of surface -to-air missiles from other countries.

And since Obama's statement, Bashar al-Assad has managed to kill another 17 thousand Syrians without crossing Obama's red line.

Until this week he did.

This week US intelligence reported that Assad has indeed been moving his chemical weapons around, most ominously they reported that he has been loading sarin gas into bombs.

This must undoubtedly be consider a violation of Obama's prohibition against "movement on the chemical weapons front."

So what did Obama do about that? He moved the "red line", back to a place Assad hasn't crossed yet!

This Monday, as reports surfaced of the increasingly desperate Assad regime moving its chemical weapons stores, Obama re-issued his "red line" threat and any mention of a prohibition against moving them, or apparently, even loading them into bombs, was removed.

At the WH Press Briefing on Monday, Press Secretary Jay Carney described Obama's new red line this way:
[T]he President has said, any use or proliferation of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime would cross a red line for the United States. The Assad regime must know that the world is watching and that they will be held accountable by the United States and the international community if they use chemical weapons, or fail to meet their obligations to secure them.
That was followed by this exchange:
Q And just to go back to the red line, I just want to clarify where the red line is for the President. Obviously, use of chemical weapons is a red line. But in terms of the movement of that, there obviously are reports that the weapons are being moved or have been moved. Is the type of movement that we’re seeing right now, does that cross the red line?

MR. CARNEY: Well, I think the President made clear that the use of weapons was a red line. We are monitoring the situation in Syria closely, and we are monitoring the regime’s chemical weapons stockpiles. I’m not going to get into intelligence matters, but as I said, we believe that with the regime’s grip on power loosening, with its failure to put down the opposition through conventional means, we have an increased concern about the possibility of the regime taking the desperate act of using its chemical weapons.

Q But at this point, you can't say for sure that what we’re seeing right now does not cross the President’s red line?

MR. CARNEY: Well, again, I think we’re talking about the use of chemical weapons.

Q But he also talked about the movement of chemical weapons in his press conference in August.

MR. CARNEY: Well, I understand that.
One might take some solace from the fact that the "whole bunch of chemical weapons" qualifier has been removed from from this latest formulation but given the reality that Assad has been able to continue to kill so many thousands without chemical weapons or US interference and, I would say, even with US passive support, the "green light" side of the ying-yang of Obama's "red line" statements shine brighter than ever.

The lesson here for the Syrian people and the Syrian Revolution is the one that has been so brutally drummed into them by 22 months of regime violence while the world watched. Look not to Western governments for support. What they did for Libya was exceptional. Here is the true face of "Responsibility to Protect." It is a lie.

The only thing Obama and NATO appear to be going now is preparing chemical weapons as a pretext for putting boots on the ground after the revolution has defeated the Assad regime.

They may be none to happy with Assad at long last, but the last thing they want is a revolutionary and democratic Syria. They may not have been willing to help the Syrian people defeat Assad, or lift a finger to throttle his campaign of "death from above", but they will intervene to help "shape" the new Syria. That is how imperialists do it.

A red shift in the light from distance galaxies is caused by their rapid movement away from us, and apparently a "red shift" in Obama's Syria policy has been caused by Assad's movement of his chemical weapons.

Assad asylum offers pour in as he is reported loading sarin gas into bombs

Follow clayclai on Twitter

The situation in Syria really seems to be coming to a head quickly now. The situation is being driven by the facts on the ground created by the recent successes of the Free Syria Army. Their growing strength and change in tactics has been bearing fruit. Several months ago, they changed their focus from the defensive struggle of trying to protect opposition communities from Assad's attacks to the offensive tactic of going after Assad's bases and his supply lines.

They have captured base after base and with each installation, an arms cache was captured as well. Many of the captured soldiers joined the FSA as well.

There is still no solid indication that the FSA has received MANPADS from NATO, Qatar or Saudi Arabia, but they definitely have gotten them from Assad. They have posted the videos to prove it. First videos of the attacks on the bases, then videos of the MANPADS captured, and now at long last, videos of Assad's jet bombers and attack helicopters being swatted out of the skies the modern way.

While they have been growing in strength and capturing supplies, they have had good success in troubling Assad's lines of communications. Recently the FSA has been able to hold key roads supplying Aleppo.

They hold most of the border crossings with Turkey, and together with the Jordanian forces, all of the border crossings to Jordan.

But the most telling battle is happening in Damascus were the opposition in now in control of about half of the capital and has been threating the airport to the point that most air traffic has been halted.

It is clear that Assad is losing control and losing it fast at this point. This is in spite his stepped up murderous attacks on the people of Syria.

For example, Assad is now reported to be using a new weapon in Syria that rolls into one weapon, two of the most criminal and genocidal weapons used against the Vietnamese by the United States, a weapon so terrible, I didn't even know it existed before he used it. Assad is dropping cluster bombs that contain napalm on his own people!

In this climate, the fear that Assad will resort to chemical weapons in a last ditch effort to destroy the revolution is real.

I now think the two day Internet and communications blackout I reported on last week may have been a test run to see just how successful he could be in turning out the lights and just what the world would do if this mass murderer closed the door to carry out his grisly work in secret. It's back up now, but not without a new batch of malware targeting activists.

The world did nothing. The focus was on Gaza because 170 Palestinians were killed that week. That many Syrians are killed every day.

Now the world leaders are playing the stick and carrot game in an effort to get Assad to go quietly, with some warning him that there'll be the devil to pay if he uses chemical weapons and others offering him political asylum if he leaves without using them.

This just in:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will meet international Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi in Dublin on Thursday to try to put a U.N. peace process for Syria back on track, diplomatic sources said.
A few days ago Obama moved his "red line" from what he might do if Assad used "a whole bunch of chemical weapons" in August to a much more definitive statement that any use would be unacceptable and would definitely provoke a military response. Other administration sources have reported that intelligence reports say that Assad has been moving this chemical stores around.

NATO has also issued a warning and is sending Patriot missiles to Turkey to be placed along the Syrian border.

It is being reported that Obama has sent troops and an aircraft carrier task force off the coast of Syria to backup those words and France is also preparing an invasion force.

Wednesday evening NBC broke the news that Assad had already put sarin nerve gas into bombs but hasn't put those bombs into planes yet.

While the threat that Assad may use chemical weapons is well founded, I believe the real fear of Obama and the NATO allies is that the Syria opposition will win without their help and they will have no leverage in shaping the new Syria.

They are rushing in now so they don't look like the ignoble son of the emperor in Gladiator who rode in after the fight was over saying "Father, Father, have I missed the battle?" and they have to hear "NATO, you have missed the war."

And since Syria is not Libya, in their minds some backwater North African country with little choice but to sell that light sweet crude at world market prices no matter what else they do internally. Syria is much bigger stakes. Syria is at the heart of the Middle East and revolutionary democracy in both Syria and Egypt will put an end to Israel's hegemony in the region.

For these reasons they really haven't done much to help the Syrian people overthrow Assad. No air support for you!

The Syrian people have been forced to walk this road alone. What foreign help they have received has been from a few thousand Libyans and jihadists, together with some weapons and money from the Gulf states and more money from the US. A pittance really, as the deaths from exposure in the refugee camps will testify this winter.

Most military experts are saying that it is too late to stop Assad from staging a chemical attack if he decides to go that route. But if stopping mass slaughter was their true purpose they would have acted long before this.

I suspect they may intervene now even if he doesn't use them, using the protection of chemical weapons as the excuse. But the real purpose will to get some "boots on the ground" to give them leverage in shaping the post-Assad Syria.

This must be opposed. Syria is for Syrians now.

A Massacre took place in Albahdaleye, committed by Assad's. Assad's thugs arrested , brutally tortured and then executed 25 Syrians.

The Associated Press is reporting:
US aware of Assad asylum offers

By MATTHEW LEE
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration said Wednesday that several countries in the Middle East and elsewhere have informally offered to grant asylum to Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family if they leave Syria.

Administration officials also said they were continuing to encourage those close to Assad to defect and said they believed that Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi, who disappeared this week, is currently in London.

The State Department said it couldn't vouch for the sincerity of the Assad asylum offers and noted that they raise serious questions of accountability for abuses committed by his government. But spokesman Mark Toner said the U.S. is convinced that Assad must leave and cannot play any role in Syria's future.

"We do understand that some countries both in the region and elsewhere have offered to host Assad and his family should they choose to leave Syria," Toner told reporters. He would not name the countries. More...

NBC reports:
Syrian leader prepares to use chemical weapons

9:42 pm on 12/05/2012
U.S. officials told NBC News that as soon as Syrian President Bashar Assad gives the order, the country’s military will use chemical weapons against its own people.

Yesterday there seemed to be no firm evidence that the Syrians were mixing the “precursor” chemicals for the nerve gas sarin. The chemical weapon could be loaded into bombs that would be dropped from Syrian Air Force fighter-bombers. But on Wednesday, NBC News said, American officials came to believe the bombs had indeed been readied with the lethal agent. The sarin bombs were not yet loaded onto the fighter planes, however, and Assad has not issued the “go” order.
Secretary of State warned President Assad once again that he would be crossing “a red line” if he used nerve gas against the country’s rebels. But “there’s little the outside world can do to stop it,” one official told NBC News. Secretary Clinton, in NATO headquarters in Brussels, said the Assad government was “increasingly desperate” and on the verge of collapse. The 21-month civil war has cost 40,000 lives already.

“We believe their fall is inevitable,” Clinton said. “It is just a question of how many people have to die before that occurs.” More...

NATO has also weigh in with a warning to Assad:
NATO warns Syria against chemical weapons use

Secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen says any use of such arms will draw 'immediate reaction' from world community.
Last Modified: 04 Dec 2012 20:06
Any use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the ongoing uprising to overthrow his government will draw "an immediate reaction" from the world community, NATO's chief has said.

Secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen's warning on Tuesday came as Syrian forces continued to hit rebel districts near Damascus, while state media reported that rebel forces had hit a school, killing dozens of children.

"The possible use of chemical weapons would be completely unacceptable for the whole international community and if anybody resorts to these terrible weapons, I would expect an immediate reaction from the international community," Rasmussen told reporters at the start of a meeting of alliance foreign ministers in Brussels. The signs that the Syrian army is losing control of the country are growing fast, so too are growing the chances of a foreign military intervention. Fighting took place in dozens of locations across Syria, including near chemical weapons stores.

And RT is saying:
Thousands of US troops arrive near Syrian shore on USS Eisenhower

Published: 06 December, 2012, 00:04
The USS Eisenhower, an American aircraft carrier that holds eight fighter bomber squadrons and 8,000 men, arrived at the Syrian coast yesterday in the midst of a heavy storm, indicating US preparation for a potential ground intervention.

While the Obama administration has not announced any sort of American-led military intervention in the war-torn country, the US is now ready to launch such action “within days” if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad decides to use chemical weapons against the opposition, the Times reports.

Some have suggested that the Assad regime may use chemical weapons against the opposition fighters in the coming days or weeks.

The arrival of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of the 11 US Navy aircraft carriers that has the capacity to hold thousands of men, is now stationed at the coast of Syria, DEBKAfile reports. The aircraft carrier joined the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, which holds about 2,500 Marines.

“We have (US) special operations forces at the right posture, they don’t have to be sent,” an unnamed US official told The Australian, which suggested that US military troops are already near Syria and ready to intervene in the conflict, if necessary. More...
According to the Australian:
Allies weigh Syria no-fly zone and special forces

Michael Evans and Deborah Haynes
December 06, 2012 12:00AM
A NO-FLY zone, ground troops and special forces form the main planks of British-US contingency plans drawn up over recent months in anticipation of a Syrian chemical attack.

If a political decision is made to intervene, a limited no-fly zone could be imposed to stop the Syrian Air Force dropping bombs with chemical warheads.

Meanwhile Al Jazeera Live Blog is reporting that Russia is now attempting to distance itself from the Assad regime and will be working with Turkey on a future Syria sans Assad:
Russian and Turkish diplomats will soon start working on new ideas for ending the conflict in Syria which emerged in talks between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Tayyip Ardogan, the Kremlin said on Wednesday.

Putin and Erdogan agreed to differ on Syria at Monday's talks in Istanbul but Russia has distanced itself from President Bashar al-Assad and tried to position itself for his potential exit from power.

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed diplomats would discuss what Putin said were "some new, fresh ideas" but gave no details.

"It was agreed that these ideas will be discussed in more detail by our diplomats in the very near future, in order to understand how viable they are and how great their potential to resolve (the Syrian crisis)," Peskov said. More...
