The white-Left Part 1: The two meanings of white

#Trump didn't threaten #Hillary, he threatened violent insurrection

Why does the Media insist on describing Donald Trump's Second Amendment comment a threat to Hillary Clinton when it should be clear that he was talking about a violent overthrow of the US government? And why is nobody mentioning Trump's "Second Amendment people," like the Lions of Trump in the context of these remarks? This is what Trump said:
“Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish — the 2nd Amendment.

By the way, and if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the 2nd Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.

But — but I'll tell you what, that will be a horrible day. If, if Hillary gets to put her judges.”
Just about everybody outside of the Trump campaign agrees that hidden in these words is the threat of violent action. If one is not to be completely obtuse, "Second Amendment people" means people with guns, so the gist of his comment is that if a President Hillary Clinton were to pick Supreme Court justices that took away the right to bear arms, then those armed people might do something about it.

That much is easy to discern.

But what?

The mainstream media has been almost universal in saying that the Trump statement was a threat against Clinton. The threat of a lone assassin.

I disagree because that makes little sense. Killing a president after she has appointed some supreme court justices can hardly be expected to sway their decisions. I think even Donald Trump's "Second Amendment people" are smart enough to see the logic of that. Killing her before she picked the judges wouldn't be much better. Her vice-president would then make similar decisions. What are they going to do then? Kill him too? Then they have to worry about the whole line of succession. More people to kill. Pretty soon they are talking about overthrowing the government, and I think that's what his "Second Amendment" comment was really saying.

The only unique advantage "Second Amendment people" have in overturning a Supreme Court decision on the Second Amendment, or anything else, is that they can attempt to do it by force of arms. Of course, they can't overturn a Supreme Court decision by force of arms without overthrowing the government that stands behind the Supreme Court and enforces its decisions.

What Donald Trump is threatening here is something we've seen in other countries, for example Italy and Germany, in the past. Namely the violent overthrow of a democratically elected government by fascist militias. Even if the Media acts like they don't know that that's what he was talking about, you can be certain his "Second Amendment people" knew what he was talking about. Therefore I find it extremely troubling that, in the context of this remark, the media has been silent about the Donald Trump's personal protection militia, the Lion's Guard, and his other well-armed, well organized, and thoroughly anti-government "Second Amendment people."

Trump and the Republicans

Donald Trump is not a Republican. I'm far from the first person saying that. A lot of lifelong Republicans have been saying that for months. That's why the past two Republican presidents, the last two Republican presidential nominees, and the Republican governor of the state in which it was held, refused to attend the nominating convention for Donald Trump. Donald Trump is the leader of a white supremacist movement and they have hijacked the Republican party.

That is why he has refused to definitively denounce and separate himself from the Ku Klux Khan, he needs those people in his ranks for what he's got coming. Consider just how far we've come in a half-century - Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater, who was the 1964 GOP pick, is widely considered the most reactionary Republican presidential candidate in my lifetime, but when the Klan offered its support, he didn't play nice with them the way Trump has. The New York Times reported:
In an informal conference after the meeting, Mr. Goldwater firmly repudiated the Ku Klux Klan and said he did not want the support of organizations bearing that name.
...
In rejecting support of the Klan, Mr. Goldwater seemed to have overruled both Mr. Miller [his vp pick] and the new Republican National Chairman, Dean Burch. In recent days both of them have said that the Republicans would not reject the support of Klansmen.
So in 1964, this most reactionary of Republican candidates actually had a better position on the KKK than his party leadership. These days the GOP standard bearers won't go near the Klan, but their party is being led by a demagogue that, while appearing to be to the left of them on many traditional Republican themes, is decidedly to their extreme right on the question of white racism.

Meet Donald Trump's "Second Amendment people"

David Riden is one of those people. This year he was a Trump delegate at the RNC but in 2009 he helped to draft The Articles Of Freedom, which claims the whole Federal government is in violation of the constitution and needs to be violently overthrown. Riden, who said he keeps in contact with a militia group in Tennessee, told Mother Jones, in no uncertain terms, what the Second Amendment means to him:
There's only one reason why the Founding Fathers put the Second Amendment…If the federal government were to follow the path of all other governments, at some point it will turn to tyranny against the people. And at that point, when it stops to uphold and abide by the Constitution—and we're talking about the Supreme Court, Congress, and the executive branch, all three are way off away from the Constitution right now—the people have the right to assemble, bear arms, go to Washington, DC, or wherever necessary, and go into military battle against the government and replace those in government with individuals that will uphold the Constitution. The Constitution should remain, but the people that are abusing it should be, the polite word is, eliminated. The harsh word is killed. And they're killed by American citizens with weapons. And if people have tanks, assault weapons, if they have bombs—they need to have the weaponry necessary to be able to overthrow the federal government.
Note: For a different reading on the history and meaning of the Second Amendment please see my: Murders of Alton Sterling & Philando Castile: No 2nd Amendment rights for blacks

Lori Gayne was another Trump delegate before she got booted from the convention for posting things like “Our brave snipers just waiting for some “N—- to try something. Love them,” under her social media handle "Whitepride."

Collins A. Bailey of Waldorf, Maryland, was another Trump delegate. He was associated with the now defunct United Sovereigns of America. Gavin Long, the man who killed three police in Baton Rogue on 17 July 2016 considered himself a black "Sovereign."  They are a very confused group. Bailey once posted something on his MySpace page that might be taken to justify such murders:
"The Second Amendment does not address duck hunting," he wrote in 2008. "Our Founding Fathers…wisely made many provisions to guard against tyranny, including tyranny from our own government."
Bailey's son, Caleb A. Bailey, was also approved as a Trump delegate before it came out that he was being indicted on federal weapons and child pornography charges. Mother Jones reported:
Unidentified federal investigators told local TV news station ABC 7 that when they raided Caleb Bailey's 75-acre gated compound in Waldorf they found a fortified subterranean room under his home stocked with grenades, tear gas, and illegal machine guns.
After Mother Jones broke the story that Trump had selected William Johnson, the leader of the American Freedom Party, a group that "exists to represent the political interests of White Americans", to be a delegate from California, his name was quickly withdrawn and blamed on "database error."

Trump has a long history of courting these groups. For years he played dog-whistle politics with them by being so outspoken about his claim that Obama is not an American citizen that he rose to be the head of the birther movement. And he has dropped other hints, like when he told the New York Times that if he were president, he would invite the anti-government Bundy family to the White House, after they had ended an armed occupation of federal offices in Nevada. The Washington Post, which has been banned from covering the Trump campaign, reported:
top Nazi leader: Trump will be a ‘real opportunity’ for white nationalists

By Peter Holley
7 August 2016
The effort to plant the seeds of white nationalism in the political mainstream, where they might blossom into pro-white political coalitions that appeal to a broader swath of Caucasian voters, will not be easy, according to the chairman of the American Nazi Party.

But Rocky Suhayda thinks there is one political figure who presents a “real opportunity” to lessen the load.

Who is it? Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president.

“Now, if Trump does win, okay, it’s going to be a real opportunity for people like white nationalists, acting intelligently to build upon that, and to go and start — you know how you have the black political caucus and what not in Congress and everything — to start building on something like that,” Suhayda declared on his radio program last month. More...
This year, the media has been very concerned about Muslim extremists pledging allegiance to ISIS. Maybe its time for them to also start worrying about white supremacists pledging allegiance to Donald Trump. Rachel Pendergraft, national organizer for the its flagship Knights Party, told the Washington Post last month that the KKK was starting to use Trump's candidacy to recruit.

America's best known Klan leader, David Duke, has let it be known that he's "100 percent behind" Trump's program.

Now we have a new militia that has been formed especial for, if not by, Donald Trump.

Meet The Lions of Trump

Raw Story broke the news 14 March 2016:
Trump militia forms to ‘forcefully protect’ rally goers against ‘far-left agitators’

14 March 2016
By David Edwards
A group of Donald Trump supporters over the weekend called for volunteers to join a would-be militia aiming to protect voters against so-called “violent far-left agitators.”
...
Hours after a protester rushed the stage at Trump’s Dayton rally, a Twitter group called “The Lion’s Guard” called on supporters of the GOP front-runner to join a make-shift militia, according to RT.

“Do you want to provide security protection to innocent people who are subject to harassment and assault by Far-left agitators?” Lion’s Guard asked in a call to action. “If so, you are welcome to join. That’s the mission — to protect innocents who can’t hire their own security guards.”

Lion’s Guard said that their members would be unarmed, “but willing to forcefully protect people if need be.” More...

Their slogan is “Better to be a lion for a day, than a lamb for eternity.” and the group took its name from a Benito Mussolini quote Donald Trump Retweeted in February:
The group's website, http://LionsOfTrump.net/about says its:
An informal civilian group dedicated to the safety and security of #Trump supporters by exposing Far-Left rioters. We are the voluntary eyes and ears of Make America Great Again on Social Media. We do not endorse instigating fights or brawling with anti-Trump marauders. The Lion Guard seeks to identify and expose plots to attack Mr. Trump, Trump Supporters, and their rallies before they even can happen.
They have a facebook page too. The website itself is very careful to steer clear of any explicit suggestions of violence. Some of the comments, not so much, as for example, Tom, 15 March 2016:
Protesters will not receive mercy….they will be sliced and diced into little bags.
Horace Bloom, author of Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler: Making A Serious Comparison has done a very important exposure website About The Fascist Lion Guard Protecting Donald Trump:
This is NOT the web site of the organization that calls itself The Lion Guard. This web site has been created to warn Americans who oppose the presidential election of Donald Trump about the Lion Guard. The Lion Guard web site is at LionsOfTrump [.net]

On Monday, March 15, a group calling itself the Lion Guard has launched a web site, seeking to organize supporters of Donald Trump into a militia to counter protests at Trump rallies. The group claims to be “dedicated to the safety and security of Trump supporters,” but has also declared itself willing to use violence, “willing to forcefully protect” Donald Trump from people it perceives to be threats.

Over the weekend, the Lion Guard organized a Twitter account, which quickly gained over 500 followers, but then shut down in under 24 hours. This led many to believe that the Lion Guard was defunct. Attention to the militia faded, but it soon popped up again at a different Twitter account, and now is organizing through its own web site.
Bloom is also very informative about the history of the lion image in fascism:

If there is any question that perhaps the lion isn’t really a symbol for fascism, consider this image from the British Fascist party in the 1920s. It features, front and center, a lion, and not a serene, peaceful, defending lion, but a snarling lion, ready to attack.

The imagery of the Trump Lion Guard is also associated with Nazi Germany, and with modern Nazi skinhead groups. One of the members of the Lion Guard, using the Twitter username Rhalitra and the white supremacist “anti-cuck” code word, appears to be at the core of the new organization, using a clean, side profile version of the group’s lion icon that has been seen nowhere else before.

Rhalitra also uses another form of the Lion Guard graphic, a black and white version of the graphic in the middle of a good deal of ornamentation, and the motto “God With Trump” on top. God with Trump sounds innocuous, until one realizes that a nearly identical design was worn by Nazis during World War II, with only one different word in the motto: Uns. The Nazi motto was Gott Mit Uns — God With Us.

Here, Rhalitra’s graphic is in the middle. On the left is a graphic used by present-day neoNazis. On the right is a lapel pin worn by the Nazis. The similarities cannot be accidental. The Lion Guard being designed by American who idolize both the Italian Fascists and the Nazis. If you squint, at the bottom of Rhalitra’s Nazi graphic you can just barely see the letters MAGA — standing for Make America Great Again.
He also talked about the significance of the Mussolini slogan for the Trump movement:
The problem isn’t just that Donald Trump admires the words of Benito Mussolini. It’s that Trump — and his supporters — admire the meaning behind the words. Mussolini’s point, one that Trump and his fans embrace, is that people must choose between being strong predators or weak prey, and that, given this choice, it is better to prey upon the weak than to allow oneself to become prey.

This is a fundamentally fascist concept, and one that is familiar to anyone who has spent any time paying attention to Donald Trump’s speeches. Trump is almost constantly talking about how how “strong” he is, and how “weak” his rivals are. He complains that other leaders have allowed the United States to become a nation of weak losers, while he will ensure that our country starts winning — that he will Make America Great Again.
On the website they are careful to emphasis that Lions Guard is a peaceful group and what's more, an Internet only group concerned exclusively with fighting for Donald on-line through social media, but there are indications that that the group is expanding beyond the virtual world. In June, a group of Arizona bikers, mostly retired cops and soldiers, announced the formation of Lions Guard Arizona. Member Cindy Perrin told KTAR News in Phoenix:
“We’re going to stand between them and any protesters that come onto the property and hopefully protect them from any bodily harm, should it get to that point,”
Bikers could turn out be a big source of recruits for Trump's militias. Chris Cox claims his "Bikers for Trump" has 30,000 members and he is in the process of transforming it from a group organizing independent rallies for Trump to a volunteer security force and Politico writes:
Trump’s campaign and paid consultants are doing little to discourage Bikers for Trump or other security volunteers.
Donald Trump is a big supporter of a new conspiracy theory favored by these white supremacist militias that claims that Barack Obama and his Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, are conspiring with Black Lives Matters activists paid by George Soros to cause riots and civil unrest that then will give Obama an excuse to cancel the elections and declare martial law.

The reason Donald Trump keeps repeating the obvious lie that Barack Hussein Obama is the founder father of ISIS, and Hilary Clinton, its founding mother, is that he is signaling his support for #SummerOfChaos propaganda theories, something else the mainstream media has been silent on.

The Summer of Chaos

Linux Beach did an article in July that debunked the "leaked emails" that allegedly brought the conspiracy to light. Needless to say, that did little to stop it. After five police were murdered in Dallas, The Dollar Vigilante wrote:
It was only two days ago that we focused on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) leaked documents showing they were planning, in concert with the Obama Regime, a “Summer of Chaos.”

We wrote:
Black Lives Matter leader Deray McKesson had two of his email accounts hacked recently … [They] showed that they are planning to create massive unrest during this election period in something they call the “Summer of Chaos”.

The leaked documents show that Soros-embraced Black Lives Matter wants to create so much chaos that martial law will be instituted and the elections cancelled. Chaos is the goal in order to destabilize the populace.
Two days later, on 7/7 (the magic number 7!), the opening shots were fired in Dallas, Texas. Just as we predicted.
Another pro-Trump website warns:
The chaos will leave the administration no choice but to declare martial law and keep Obama in office due to this unfortunate summer of chaos. Our own Hillary style ‘Arab Spring’!
Is there a better way to rally the troops for a violent insurrection than to predict that the current government is planning to seize power illegally?

Now Donald Trump has been accusing Obama and Clinton of starting ISIS since he made his Second Amendment comment. The media has also been talking about this non-stop, but they haven't connected the dots between these statements and their real audience. If so many people are saying that this behavior may cost Trump the election, don't you think he is aware of that problem? He continues to make these outrageous statements, even though they may hurt him at the polls, because he doesn't see the election as the only way to get what he wants. I think he is willing to speak more openly to his base, his "Second Amendment people," even if it risks his electoral success, precisely because he is losing badly in the polls and doesn't see the election as his only road to power. That is why he is building para-military organizations or bringing them under his leadership. Maybe that is why he still refuses to release his tax returns. He doesn't want us to know how much money he is spending with certain groups. We don't know how dangerous they are now because they are very secretive and we haven't done our homework yet.

Donald Trump is a fascist. Ivana Trump said he kept a collection of Adoph Hitler's speeches, My New Order, in a bedside cabinet. If he can't rise to power through the election, he may be preparing a Plan B. If he does manage to get elected, it may take more than another election to get him out of power. This election year is unlike any other in American history. It requires all who can vote to do so and to cast their vote in such a way that not only is Donald Trump defeated and defeated by such a wide margin that these avowed white supremacists learn that they can never seize state power in the United States. Those that counsel us not to vote for the lesser evil would have a greater evil come to power and in 2016 that evil is too great to play these silly Leftist games with.

I know it sounds ridiculous to talk about Donald Trump riding to power on the bikes of right-wing militias and I'm sure a lot of Jill Stein supporters will accuse me of fearmongering. But I don't mind. A year ago, I never thought Donald Trump would have made it this far. This year I think the threat is real.

Meet #Green Party's #JillStein, #Putin sock-puppet & #Assad apologist

Residents inspect a damaged site from airstrikes carried out by the Russian air force in Nawa city, Deraa, Syria, November 21, 2015
By December 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin was greatly intensifying the bombing of Syria he had begun in September. It was also starting to become clear that his main target wasn't Daesh but the revolutionary forces fighting the Assad regime and he didn't much care how many civilians he killed in the process. Business Insider reported:
'We’ve never been bombed like this': Russia's military campaign in Syria has escalated to new levels

By Natasha Bertrand
22 December 2015
On Sunday, Russian airstrikes over a busy marketplace in the rebel-held city of Idlib, Syria, killed at least 70 civilians and wounded dozens more.

“We’ve never been bombed like this," Issa Khaled, a resident of the Aleppo suburb of Ghouta, told The Guardian the day after the attack.

"The skies above us looked like Hiroshima," he said, referring to the Japanese city targeted by an atomic bomb during World War II. "There were clouds like mushrooms everywhere we looked. The destruction was incredible." More...

Reuters reported:
Amnesty says Russian bombing of Syria may be a war crime

By Maria Tsvetkova
23 December 2015
Russia's bombing of Syria has killed many civilians and may amount to a war crime, Amnesty International said on Wednesday, presenting what it said was evidence that Moscow's actions had violated humanitarian law.

"Russian air strikes in Syria have killed hundreds of civilians and caused massive destruction in residential areas, striking homes, a mosque and a busy market, as well as medical facilities, in...attacks that show evidence of violations of international humanitarian law," Amnesty said in a report. More...
Business Insider also predicted the effect this would have on the already looming Syrian refugee crisis. Some would escape the bombing only to be drowned in the Med:
The raids, targeting rebel supply lines and civilian infrastructure, have created "an emerging humanitarian crisis" and exacerbated a refugee crisis that already has Europe near its breaking point.
This was exactly what Putin wanted. In Moscow, they had a celebration! To provide what might be called "diplomatic cover" for the horrific crimes the Kremlin was committing in Syria, they held a gala affair, a conference to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Putin's #1 international propaganda outlet, Russia Today, renamed RT so as to better deceive. Less letters in the name made it no less an arm of the Russian state. Accuracy in Media wrote about this event. Mike Flynn is now a Trump adviser:
In trying to attract and confuse an American audience, RT regularly features Marxist and radical commentators in the U.S. such as Noam Chomsky, Gloria La Riva of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Carl Dix of the Revolutionary Communist Party, and 9/11 “inside job” advocate and radio host Alex Jones. It is preferable for the Russians to use foreigners, especially Americans, to make their propaganda points. Flynn is probably the most important American ever snared in RT’s web. He has added propaganda value because of his impressive background and years of service in the U.S. Army.

The RT conference was held at a time when the Russian regime was determined to divert global attention away from its military intervention on behalf of its long-time client state of Syria. Research analyst Hugo Spaulding of the Institute for the Study of War notes that Russia’s current air campaign in Syria “is focused on targeting Syrian armed opposition groups fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad rather than ISIS.” The Syrian Network for Human Rights reports that Russian military strikes in Syria have killed hundreds of civilians during the course of bombing hospitals, bakeries, and markets. The result has been increasing refugee flows into Turkey and Europe.

RT, however, promotes a different version of reality, a “false narrative,” as Spaulding calls it. Indeed, that is the purpose of RT—to whitewash military aggression by the Russian state and focus attention on what the United States and its allies are supposedly doing in the world.
Jill Stein, Mike Flynn have dinner with Putin & friends
The AIM article focused on the attendance of the former director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. Michael Flynn was recently in the news as a possible Donald Trump VP pick and he remains as Trump's top military adviser. Putin has made clear his preference for Trump as the next US president.

Julian Assange couldn't come in person
But Michael Flynn wasn't the only person there destine to play a Putin-friendly role in the American presidential contest. WikiLeaks head and RT show host Julian Assange made a video appearance. Whether or not he got the DNC emails from Russian spooks, Putin was clearly pleased by their release.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was also there. Like Flynn, she talked to Putin personally. While Russian bombs were killing Syrian babies, she stood in front of the Kremlin and talked about the Russian contributions to peace. She didn't have a single word of criticism for what Russia was doing in Syria, neither did she raise any objections to Putin's treatment of reporters, human rights activists or the LGBT community.

AntikriegTV - In Moscow, Presidential Candidate Stein Calls For US Foreign Policy of Principled Collaboration Rather than Lawless Domination http://www.jill2016.com/news

"It's been very exciting to see our message and our vision really resonate with others who are really looking for a way to bring us all together around a world that works for all of us and that's really what our message has been here, that we don't need war in Syria. We don't need nuclear confrontation. We don't need climate meltdown. We do have a way forward based on a green economy, a peaceful economy, and on diplomacy, and working with each other across our histories of conflict to transcend that, and actually sit down in respect, and replace a US policy of domination with a way forward based on respect, collaboration, international law, and human rights."
Bill Weinberg's Countervortex says Jill Stein's party "is practically a stateside propaganda organ of the Bashar Assad regime." He then goes on to elaborate:
The Green Party platform contains not a single word about Syria, despite a lengthy section on the "Palestinian-Israeli Conflict." This committment to human rights is rather (shall we say?) selective. Let's start by examining Stein's "Green Shadow Cabinet"—which openly shills for the Assad regime. Stein's "Attorney General" Kevin Zeese runs a website with the hilariously ironic name of Popular Resistance, which we have had to call out as a platform for Assad regime propaganda, repeatedly seeking to exculpate Assad of the Ghouta chemical attack and portraying the Syrian opposition as monolithically jihadist. Worse yet, the Shadow Cabinet's Ajamu Baraka, identified as "Public Intervenor for Human Rights" (sic!), actually hailed Assad's thoroughly controlled psuedo-elections which confirmed his inherited dictatorial rule in 2014 as a victory against "foreign intervention," crowing about Assad's widespread "support," and how the opposition was "fomented" by the "gangster states of NATO."

Green Party Watch notes that after the Ghouta attack, when Obama briefly threatened air-strikes against Assad's military forces, Stein said: "President Obama's rush to war risks a repeat of 2003, when President Bush's order to invade Iraq prevented UN inspectors from discovering that Saddam Hussein’s alleged WMDs, one of the stated reasons for war, did not exist." Talk about fighting the last war! To say this days after a chemical massacre in which some 1,400 perished simply demolishes all the Green Party's empty talk about human rights. The chemical weapons in Syria assuredly existed—and in fact, gas attacks have continued (repeatedly) even after Assad ostensibly disposed of his chemical arsenal under the deal that averted air-strikes. To complete silence from Stein and her party, of course. And as for "rush to war"—are we supposed to believe Syria (now the biggest refugee crisis on the planet) is at peace as long as the US isn't involved?

In an interview on Soundcloud, Stein even repeated the discredited jive about how the rebels gassed their own people at Ghouta as a provocation. The interview now seems to have been deleted—maybe Stein realized this was just a bit too much? But we'll note that Stein's predecessor as Green presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney actually travelled to Damascus in the aftermath of the Ghouta attack to express her support for the Assad regime!
Clearly, Jill Stein is no friend of what is almost certainly the most pivotal revolutionary struggle of the current period. In contrast to this, Ruth Sherlock reported in The Telegraph, 29 July 2016, that Clinton plans to break with Obama's Syria policy:
Hillary Clinton will order a "full review" of the United States' strategy on Syria as a "first key task" of her presidency, resetting the policy to emphasise the "murderous" nature of the Assad regime, foreign policy adviser with her campaign has said.

Jeremy Bash, who served as chief of staff for the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency, said Mrs Clinton would both escalate the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, and work to get Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, "out of there".

"A Clinton administration will not shrink from making clear to the world exactly what the Assad regime is," he said in an exclusive interview with The Telegraph. "It is a murderous regime that violates human rights; that has violated international law; used chemical weapons against his own people; has killed hundreds of thousands of people, including tens of thousands of children."
Not only is Hillary Clinton's position far more sympathetic to the Syrian people and their plight, as a purely practical political matter, she is correct to embrace the reality that any solution that does not involve the overthrow of the Assad regime can never succeed in bringing peace to Syria or allowing the millions of Syrian refugees to go home. So while Jill Stein, whose campaign is really against Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump, makes something like "Just say no to the lesser evil" the cornerstone of her campaign, at least on Syria as compared to Clinton, she isn't even the lesser evil!
How hard-nosed politicians win elections

Now that I have done what I can to tarnish Jill Stein's image, I will return the favor by revealing a dark family secret about myself. My father, who's name I bear (I dropped the Junior after he died in 2003), was for most of his life, a top Republican operative. He spent his life getting Republicans elected, especially to the White House. 1964 was still early in his career. That year the contest was between Republican Barry Goldwater and Democrat Lyndon B Johnson, and one of the things that it is alleged my father did as part of the GOP effort to get Goldwater elected was to run a phony write-in campaign for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This fraud involved the printing of 1.5 million leaflets and the purchase of spot radio ads "urging Negro voters to write in the name of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for President when they vote tomorrow" according to a 3 November 1964 New York Times article about the charade. The whole thing was done in the name of a non-existent front group, Committee for Negroes in Government, and was never meant to be traced back to the GOP or my father. It was, only because he made what I'm sure he looked back on as a rookie mistake. As the Times told it:
The Republican official who ordered the leaflets from an Atlantic City printing company was identified today by New Jersey Attorney General Arthur J. Sills as Clay Claiborne, assistant to the chairman of the Republican National Committee in charge of Negro affairs.
My father never said how many of the leafleters were paid versus tricked into doing it for "the cause." When the news broke, Dr. King called a press conference in Atlanta:
“This is a cruel and vicious attempt to confuse Negro voters and to nullify their votes. So I would like to take this opportunity to urge every Negro voter to vote for one of the candidates on the ballot.

“I am not a candidate; please do not vote for me. This will waste the entire ballot.

“The handbills and radio announcements urging you to write in my name are part of an attempt to cancel out your vote. I call on you to repudiate this plot by getting out and voting for one of the candidates on the ballot.

“This is typical of the kind of attempts that have been made to disenfranchise Negroes for the past 100 years, and a healthy democracy must not continue to tolerate this kind of denial of all for which our nation stands.”
Now, why am I revealing this family secret to you? Because I want to make a point. My father was a very hard-nosed politician, and a successful one at that! Successful enough to have come out of the Baltimore ghettoes and send junior to a private Midwest university - (where he promptly fell in with the SDS types.) He would tell you first that politics is the art of the possible, and in 1964 it was only possible for Goldwater or Johnson to get enough votes to be elected president. He would have told you that as far as he was concerned, a vote that didn't go to Johnson was the next best thing to a direct vote for Goldwater and it didn't matter to him whether a potential Johnson voter stayed home or voted for a 3rd party. Johnson already had a well deserved reputation as a Southerner and a racist, although his presidency is perhaps best remembered for its progress on civil rights. Goldwater was deservedly seen as even worst. My father knew that most black voters were determined to go to the polls and vote for what they saw as the lesser evil - Johnson. My father knew that the party had little chance of convincing black voters that Goldwater was the lesser evil, so he had devised this scheme, secretly funded by GOP dollars, to tear black voters away from Johnson by convincing them to make a symbolic vote "for the greater good."

If my father were still alive and active politically today, I like to think he would be among the growing ranks of Republicans that are breaking with Donald Trump. Those are the people he spent a lifetime working with. Either way, he would tell you that as far as the election goes, the role Jill Stein and the Green Party will play is little different from his phony write-in campaign. He might even suggest the GOP make some campaign contributions - secretly, of course. They could easily be hidden among the ones she has already received from the likes of AON, IBM and UPS.

Putin is also a smart enough politician to see the value of Jill Stein's campaign in getting Donald Trump elected. I offer no proof that any Kremlin money has ever been offered or accepted and I'm sure Putin would be happy to receive services for free. My point is unscrupulous oppositions often pays for the kind of spoiler effort Jill Stein is mounting, and she knows it is likely to help put Trump into the White House. She said as much on Democracy Now:
The lesser evil is a losing strategy, because people stop coming out to vote for lesser evil politicians throwing them under the bus. So the Republicans will win anyhow.
The Republicans will win if enough Democrats either stay home or vote for Jill Stein. Stein knows "Donald Trump is about the rise of right-wing extremism," not to mention white supremacy (she doesn't), but she is focusing her attacks on Clinton anyway, saying "Hillary Clinton is the problem; she is not the solution to Donald Trump. We are the solution." Just what that last bit means isn't quite clear. What are her plans for carrying on the struggle under a Trump presidency?

She would probably tell us they are pretty much the same as they will be for a Clinton presidency because central to the idea that the lesser of two evils is a losing strategy is the reality that in the past there has been very little difference in the two evils. In Karl Marx's words, the Republican and Democrat parties are both two wings of the same bird of prey. We know that every four years the US public is given a choice between two preselected nominees that can be expected to rule in more or less the same neo-liberal manner.

Donald Trump protection militia copied Nazi badge
That has been the case for every presidential candidate with a real chance of winning in my lifetime, until now. Donald Trump has put white supremacy at the center of his campaign like no other major candidate in living memory. He is building his own militia even as the already existing white power militias are growing and uniting behind him. He has made extra-legal violence an integral part of his campaign, like his suggestion today that his "Second Amendment people" might take matters in their own hands if Hillary Clinton wins and does things they oppose.

To make the argument that people should vote for Stein instead of Clinton, the Greens have to say that this is just another two party election. Hillary Clinton is your typical Democrat and Donald Trump is your typical Republican. That is a very dangerous argument to be making now because it ain't true. Donald Trump is not your typical Republican presidential candidate. What kind of Republican is nominated at a national convention that the two past living GOP presidents, the two most recent GOP nominees, and the Republican governor of the state where the convention is held, refuse to attend? A white supremacist coup, led by Donald Trump, has hijacked the Republican party. That's why we will keep seeing things like the letter of opposition to Trump signed by 50 GOP spooks and defections like Senator Susan Collins last night.

The Left has made big errors in the past by failing to look deeply at new developments and blindly assuming its what its always been.  It did that when it claimed the revolutions in Libya and Syria were no different than the imperialist war against Iraq, and now it is in danger of doing it again by acting as if this election is no different than the past dozen. Many may be prone to this because eight years ago they bought into the fairytale that Obama's candidacy made that election different, only to later be disillusioned. The hope then was false but the danger now is very real. Fascism has been voted in before. getting rid of it, another matter entirely.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has a long history of tracking hate groups in the United States, and they have become very alarmed by what they see happening:
From the candidacy of Donald Trump to the British decision to leave the European Union (EU), from the rise of a radical movement of antigovernment county sheriffs to a metastasizing rage aimed at political and economic elites, something important and incredibly dangerous is happening in the Western world.
Of course, not everybody sees it that way. In their attempt to get liberals to throw away their vote "for the greater good" Jill Stein supporters need to convince us that there's really very little difference between the two real choices. In doing that they find themselves focusing of Hillary Clinton's faults and belittling Donald Trump's. Since they are trying to win voters away from Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump, their campaigning will be mainly against Clinton. Other than capturing votes that otherwise might hurt him, like my father did with his bogus MLK write-in campaign for Goldwater, this is another way the Green Party is helping the Trump campaign.

The vast majority of black voters are on the "Defeat Trump/Stop Fascism bandwagon" as some Green Party supporters condescendingly call it. At least I think that is what the numbers show. In the past, thanks, in part to the efforts of people like my father, the GOP could count on a small black vote. Bush got 9% in 2000 and 11% in 2004. Obama got 93% of the black vote and now that he isn't running, the GOP was hoping to get back some of that black vote. But with Trump heading the ticket, it doesn't look like that will be the case. Trump is expected to get 1% of the black vote. Some polls have him with 0%. At least black voters are clear, this ain't my daddy's GOP. One can only hope that those white liberals planning on using their vote to feel good about themselves wake up to the reality that a violence prone white supremacist regime is knocking on the door of the White House and most important thing that has to happen in this election is that he be firmly and overwhelmingly denied.

Aleppo pays dearly in Syria’s unwinnable war of attrition

Republished from FT:
Aleppo pays dearly in Syria’s unwinnable war of attrition

David Gardner in Beirut
4 August 2016

Political solution might emerge when there is little left to destroy

The ferocious fight for Aleppo, started with Russian air strikes and a ground offensive by Bashar al-Assad’s forces four weeks ago and met this week by a huge rebel counter-offensive, is shaping up as the biggest battle of a piteous civil war now well into its sixth year. Begun with high regime hopes it could recapture Syria’s largest city and turn the tables on its opponents, the struggle is settling into a pattern of attrition as Aleppo, historically the country’s commercial hub, is pounded to dust.

Wave upon wave of Russian jets bomb the rebel-held east of the city, supplemented by barrel bombs rolled out of Syrian army helicopters. Rebel sappers meanwhile have detonated a vast tunnel bomb under Assad loyalist headquarters in the west of the city. An estimated 300,000 civilians, running out of food, medicine and fuel, are trapped in the fighting, mistrustful of so-called “humanitarian corridors” the regime opened for them supposedly to escape.

The regime is reliant on Hizbollah, the Lebanese Shia paramilitaries, and Iran’s revolutionary guards, to spearhead its ground forces. On the rebel side, the main strike force is the jihadi group that last week severed its links with al-Qaeda and rebranded itself from Jabhat al-Nusra to Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (Levant Conquest Front). Though Nusra had almost no presence inside Aleppo, for this operation it has closed ranks with mainstream rebel forces — some of them backed by the US and its allies — to push through from south of the city and lift the regime’s siege.

Yet it is not clear either side really expects Aleppo, great prize and morale barometer though it is, to be decisive. The battle looks to be more about each side cutting the other’s supply lines. The regime is trying to separate the rebels in Aleppo from their adjoining stronghold in Idlib and, above all, from the border with Turkey and its resupply pipeline. The rebels, as well as trying to break the siege, want to cut regime lines westwards. Aleppo may be another chapter in the baleful story of bloody stalemate in a nevertheless shape-changing civil war.

The Assad regime’s forces “can continue taking ground but they can’t hold it”, says one western official involved with Syria. Conversely, “the opposition will lose ground but the army will not be able to move freely”.

Put another way, while President Vladimir Putin’s decision to intervene in Syria 10 months ago undoubtedly salvaged President Assad when he was at risk of succumbing to the rebels, the regime has so far been unable to take full advantage of the ferocity of Russia’s air force with commensurate advances on the ground. Seizing and holding ground, after all, needs troops, and Mr Assad’s army is severely depleted — often reliant on Iran and Hizbollah, and the militia networks they have created.

The lack of numbers and cohesion applies to the fragmented opposition, too, but on the government side, Mr Assad’s patrons look dismayed by the fighting ability of the Syrian army after five years of war.

Russian officers, who inherit a long army-to-army relationship over almost half a century of Assad family rule, are said by Arab and western officials to be shocked at the condition and morale of Syria’s regular forces. There also seems to be doubt about their reliability in Iranian and Hizbollah circles, whose forces are taking growing casualties, including senior officers and operatives.

While all this may amount to little more than murmuring now, it does not suggest Syria’s patrons will provide the ground forces to reconquer, as Mr Assad regularly pledges, every inch of the country. The calculation of regime and rebels, therefore, may come down to judging at what point attrition favours them in negotiation.

Diplomacy, led by a US now fixated on fighting Isis and a Russia determined to restore its superpower status, has failed Syria. A political solution may start to look more urgent once the two external actors realise that while neither side can win on the ground, everyone can keep losing. Aleppo, tragically, could be a step along that road.

By abandoning Aleppo, the world has empowered jihadists

Al Jazeera is reporting that at least 60 people were killed by air strikes in Aleppo yesterday. I am republishing this important new piece in The New Arab by Robin Yassin-Kassab:
By abandoning Aleppo, the world has empowered jihadists
The people of Aleppo have no choice but to work with Nusra [Anadolu]

By Robin Yassin-Kassab
3 August 2016

Aleppo is 7000 years old. Its name has mythical origins related to the prophet Abraham and his cow, its opulent history underwritten by its place on the Silk Road. Socially and architecturally unique, in its pre-war state Muslims and Christians, and Arabs, Armenians, Turkmen and Kurds, lived and traded in streets redolent sometimes of the Ottoman empire, sometimes of corners of Paris. Before the war Aleppo contained the world’s largest and most intact Arab-Islamic Old City. Now – with the covered souq, the Umayyad mosque, and many other markets, baths and khans destroyed – that honour passes to Morocco’s Fez.

The city’s working class-eastern districts have been liberated twice in the last five years. On the first occasion, July 2012, armed farmers swept in from the countryside to join urban revolutionaries against their Assadist tormentors and for a few weeks it felt the Assad regime would crumble in Syria’s largest city and economic powerhouse. But the battle soon succumbed to the war’s general logic: rebel ammunition ran out, the fighters squabbled and looted, foreign jihadists took advantage and a stalemate reigned.

These strangers pranced about on blast-traumatised horses, imposed their brutal versions of sharia law -- including executing a fifteen-year-old coffee-seller for supposed blasphemy -- and finally declared themselves a state.

In January 2014, prompted by popular anger, the entire armed rebellion declared war on Islamic State, driving it out of western Syria, Aleppo city included. This was the second liberation.

Aleppo is Syria’s most important centre of civil activism. It houses revolutionary councils and emergency healthcare projects, independent newspapers and radio stations, theatre groups and basement schools. Despite years of barrel bombs and scud missiles, 300,000 people remain in the liberated zone.

The fall of Aleppo certainly wouldn’t end the war, but it would probably mark the final defeat of the revolution. A few days ago it seemed this course of events was inevitable. Almost every relevant local, regional and global power was working to ensure it.

"The fall of Aleppo certainly wouldn’t end the war, but it would probably mark the final defeat of the revolution"

On July 17, following weeks of intense Russian bombing and ground attacks by Iranian-backed Shia militias from Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan, the regime captured the Castello Road. This meant Aleppo was fully beseiged.

IS, as usual, was attacking the rebels at the same time that Assad was.

So was the YPG, armed wing of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (or PYD), which had helped prepare the siege by invading Arab-majority towns to the north. The PYD claimed it was fighting ‘jihadists’, but these areas were defended by Free Syrian Army factions and ruled by independent councils.

American artist and journalist Molly Crabapple visited Azaz, a town hard-pressed by the PYD, after its second liberation. She described it thus: “They’d painted over the IS emblems in shocking pink, and then they’d painted the Quranic verse ‘There is no compulsion in religion’.”

Near Azaz the PYD advanced under Russian cover. In IS-held Manbij, it (as the dominant element in the ill-named Syrian Democratic Forces) advances under American planes. American bombing atrocities (such as the strikes on July 19 killing scores of civilians) are less frequent, less deliberate, but just as devastating as those perpetrated by Russia.

Russia is dropping banned cluster and incendiary bombs on a grand scale. Russian and Assadist planes have upped the war on hospitals, hitting six medical facilities in 24 hours (on July 23 and 24).

The US administration has had nothing to say about this. Quite the contrary, President Obama has apparently approved a proposal to cooordinate American airstrikes with Russia, against Jabhat al-Nusra. And the Obama administration has consistently vetoed transfers of essential anti-aircraft weaponry to the rebels.

"Aleppo has been all but abandoned by the world"

Facing suffocation and defeat, with no-one coming to their aid, revolutionaries and fighters have now decided to unify their energies. For the last four days rebels have fought to lift the siege, attacking from multiple directions on a 20-km-long front.

Demonstrators, meanwhile, are marching in support of the battle, and citizens are organising their own inpromptu No-Fly Zone, burning hundreds of tyres to cloud the skies and protect the advancing fighters. These include Free Army and Islamist battalions from across Aleppo and northern Syria.

To the south of the city, the vanguard force is Jaish al-Fateh, comprising Ahrar al-Sham and the jihadists of Jabhat al-Nusra. Jaish al-Fateh is close to breaking the siege.

America watched or actively collaborated as Aleppo was driven into the abyss. Nusra, on the other hand, came to the people’s rescue. What message does this send?

For Syrians facing death and no good options, military realities must weigh heavier than social and political differences. In other words, in current conditions, they have no choice but to work with Nusra.

Now rebranded as ‘Fateh al-Sham’ and formally delinked from al-Qaida, Nusra is embedding itself by military prowess. Its role is being immeasurably strengthened by Russian and American policies.

Breaking the siege of Aleppo - 21st Century's Paris Commune

There's a lot going on in the battle for Aleppo and with some 300,000 civilians being put at risk, one would think it would have a higher profile in the news than it does, but it doesn't so I have put together this piece on my day off. The action isn't all confined to Aleppo either. Around Idlib the rebels shot down a Russian helicopter yesterday and several hours later another helicopter dropped a couple of barrels of what is believed to be chlorine near by. 33 people got sick. The Russians have denied that there was a chemical attack. Democracy Now mentioned the chemical attack but implied it was another rebel false-flag and failed to mention the very telling helicopter delivery of the CW. Charles Lister has given us a good summary of the current state of affairs in his Monday Briefing for the Middle East Institute:
All Eyes on Aleppo

Now that the siege is in place, no party to the pre-regime alliance can afford to let it slip.

Charles Lister, Senior Fellow
The siege of Aleppo looks set to be a major pivot point in the Syrian crisis. While Russia's intervention in Syria in September 2015 transformed the balance of power on the ground, it was a later Iranian push from early-2016 that facilitated the siege of Aleppo itself. As Iranian-backed pro-regime forces steadily closed in on key strangle points like the Castello Road, Russia saw itself gradually sucked into a battle in which its airpower is now a crucially important factor. Now that the siege is in place, no party to the pre-regime alliance can afford to let it slip.

Contrary to Syrian state media reporting, Aleppo's opposition is highly unlikely to surrender or submit to amnesty. Similarly, Russia's creation of four "humanitarian corridors" leading directly into regime-held territory will induce only fear within the city's civilian residents, who watched similar schemes in Homs in 2014 result in mass arrest and disappearances.

The city's Free Syrian Army-dominated Fatah Halab coalition has been planning for the siege since late-2015, with its senior leaders saying they now intend to adopt guerrilla warfare tactics to retaliate against regime targets. More significant, however, has been the reaction of armed groups outside the city. Commanders from Latakia, Hama, Idlib and Aleppo have coalesced to launch what may be the most substantial opposition operation of the conflict. Personal, political and ideological differences have been shelved in order to prioritize a counter-offensive that within 36-hours looks to have the potential to at least temporarily break the siege of the city. Unsurprisingly, the newly re-branded Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, has assumed a lead role.

Whatever the ultimate outcome, further military escalation and civilian suffering in Aleppo promises only to make political efforts to solve Syria's crisis even harder.

The New York Times is reporting on daily life in liberated Aleppo:
Where CPR on a Boy Is Time Wasted: U.S. Doctors Recall Aleppo’s Horrors

By Anne Barnard
31 July 2016
BEIRUT, Lebanon — In the Syrian city of Aleppo, children carrying groceries climb 15-foot mounds of rubble on their way home. Shoppers ignore vibrations from falling bombs. Buildings stand sliced in half, wires and beds and bathtubs exposed, with families still living inside. Most days, doctors have just seconds to decide which children to try to save and which to let die, as parents shriek and explosions shake the ground.

Three American doctors said such scenes were replaying in their minds after a recent visit to the insurgent-held section of Aleppo. The doctors provided a fresh perspective on life there, because their Syrian colleagues in Aleppo, after four years of bombardment by government forces, have grown tired of describing the horrors to the outside world and have, in some sense, stopped noticing. Now Media is reporting how the innovative opposition is creating its own 'no-fly' zone, and giving the phrase "Aleppo Is Burning" a whole new meaning:
Syrians establish 'no-fly zone' over Aleppo

Tired of waiting for foreign assistance, Syrians unilaterally came up with a creative solution to hamper the regime’s deadly air power
2 August 2016
Haid Haid
A no-fly zone was reportedly established in Aleppo on Sunday, July 31, according to Syrian activists. However, this no-fly zone is unconventional as it was not set up via a UN Security Council resolution nor enforced by foreign superpowers. Syrians in Aleppo province created the no-fly zone to support a major offensive launched by Jaysh al-Fatah, a coalition of rebel groups, to break the siege imposed by the Syrian regime on the opposition-held parts of the city. This counter attack came days after pro-Syrian government forces were able to cut off the Castello Road, the only route in and out of rebel-held areas of Aleppo. An estimated 300,000 citizens in Aleppo are currently under siege, which has led to a spiralling rise in food prices due to shortages in opposition neighbourhoods. The use of air power has been Assad’s trump card in the Syrian conflict, which only increased in significance after Russia intervened in support of the Syrian regime in September 2015. To combat this advantage, the rebels’ offensive was also coupled with calls for civilians to create their own no-fly zone by burning tires, which created a big cloud of black smoke to obstruct the view of the planes and limit their influence on the battle. The Guardian has this on the CW attack:
Dozens ill after suspected chlorine attack in Syria

Victims in Saraqeb, Idlib province, have breathing problems, and all are coughing and have bloodshot eyes, say doctors
2 August 2016
More than two dozen people have been injured in a suspected chemical attack on a town in northern Syria, a doctor who treated the victims and aid workers said.
The attack, using a gas cylinder laced with chlorine, targeted the town of Saraqeb in Idlib province, which is under opposition control, and near where a Russian helicopter was shot down on Monday.

It came almost exactly a year after the UN security council adopted a resolution that set a 12 month-deadline to identify the perpetrators of chlorine attacks in Syria. The deadline expires next week.

Ibrahim al-Assaad, a doctor who treated the victims, said none of the 29 injured he saw exhibited physical wounds. “All of them had breathing and lung problems, spanning mild, moderate and severe symptoms, while coughing and having bloodshot eyes,” he said. “They smelled of chlorine, and the civil defence workers who rescued them said the site of the attack also smelled strongly of chlorine.”

“It is impossible to get used to this pain we see,” he added. “Impossible.”

The suspected chemical attack occurred against a backdrop of escalating warfare across Syria and particularly in the neighbouring province of Aleppo, where rebels have launched a wide-ranging offensive to break a weeks-long siege on the opposition-held east of the city. More...

Just another day in Syria. Not a bad day by the standards the world has found acceptable over the past five years. Less than a hundred were killed today. They were all Arabs, so nothing to make the TV news really.
